How were the first days of Rimagine and how was the company founded?
In 2004, Christoph, John Ray and me were talking about the fact that 100,000s of manufacturers produce products in China, but would ship them overseas to get them photographed over there. As Christoph and I worked in companies in Germany, which imported products from China, we saw a potential to save time and money by photographing products before those are shipped. We literally called up a few companies which we knew, and they immediately sent us a few products for a test shooting. While we all were still employed by other companies, we suddenly had boxes full of products sitting in our apartments, waiting to be photographed. We looked at them and realized – ‘now we gotta do something’! That was the start of Rimagine – I invite you to read Our Story.
How do you describe Rimagine? Is it a photography studio, a photo agency or creative agency?
Rimagine is definitely not a photography studio nor a photo agency nor a creative agency. We are a full-service photography company with a complete setup to do any kind of photography project. All our talents work under the same roof at one studio in Shanghai - this facilitates a concentration of know-how, direct communication and a short decision making process, resulting in an efficient execution, flexibility and a fast response time. These are all advantages our clients benefit from, which you do not get working with your regular studio or creative agency.
Where are you from and what did you do before joining Rimagine?
I am from Germany and live in Shanghai since 2002 . Prior to starting Rimagine, I was working as marketing director at China Online in Shanghai for two years, and before that, I worked in the marketing team of an online bank in Germany. In actually all my previous jobs, I was in touch with photography, but on the other side of the table. I remember my first photo shoot for the online bank in Berlin in a beautiful park with an extensive photography crew: I enjoyed every second of it! I even said to myself at that time that it would be just great to actually work in photography as it's so creative, interesting and fun. I really loved it. However, at that time I would have never imagined that I would eventually start my own photography business at some point.
What’s your job and how does a normal day look like?
As general manager of a young company, there are many things you have to manage and take care of on a daily basis. We work hard on establishing a company-wide worklflow and process so that all responsibilities are clear and don't need a lot of involvement from the management. I also focus a lot of my time to talk to and fully understand our client's situations. I typically work from 9 to 6.30pm, and try to leave the office not too late, in order to have enough quality down-time to get sufficient relaxation.
Who do you work with the most in the company?
On a day to day basis, I mostly work with our account managers, photographers and graphic designers. Once a week, we have our production meeting, where we discuss every single on-going and potential job. We also do a lot of PPMs (pre-production meetings) and de-briefs about completed jobs. We believe it’s very important to regularly have all talents at the same table to discuss what's going on - and what's up next.
How many people work at Rimagine and how are the teams divided?
Currently, we have a bit more than 20 talents which are divided into business teams (account management, finance, HR, marketing) and creative teams (photography, retouching and graphic design). To find great talents in Shanghai or China is a challenging task, especially because there are just not many people in our industry with experience. As a young company, we choose every candidate very carefully and with a long-term plan in mind, because our resources are limited and choosing the right talents make all the difference.
Who are Rimagine’s clients and which ones are the most important ones?
Every client is our most important client - honestly. We try to work very hard for every company we work with, because we believe it takes hard, honest work, reliability and integrity to build up long-lasting relations with our clients. We are in the B2B business, but at the end we deal with real people who have different expectations, quality standards and wishes. We focus on six market sectors: Product marketers, product distributors, industrial companies, service companies, retail companies and agencies. All the companies we work with are usually brand-driven companies which understand the value of premium marketing material.
What do you do in your free time? What are you hobbies?
In my free time, I play a lot of tennis and I go to the gym. Sometimes, I play golf too, which is great because you got to leave the city for that. I love to read books, go to massages. I can spend hours or days even with my big record collection, which is unfortunately in Germany. I also like to go out a lot, watch movies, cook or have dinners with friends.
